Tire sizes. What the numbers actually mean. MyCarGuyChrisYancey.com in Chattanooga, TN

A lot of people know that every car has a tire size and where to find it, either in the owners manual or on the side of the tire itself.  But many people have no idea what the tire size (275/55R20) actually means.  A few may know or realize that the R18  R20 part is the rim or wheel size.  What the first three digits is, is the width in milimeters.  In the above example 275/55R20, the tire would be 275mm wide.  The next number (55) is the percentage of width that the side wall of the tire is.  This example would mean the sidewall of this tire is 55% of 275mm or 151.25mm tall.  So this tire would be 275mm wide with a side wall of 151.25mm on a 20 inch rim.
